Opportunity Details

Field Educator - Outdoor Science Education

Sierra Nevada Journeys is currently seeking capable interns and volunteers with experience working with elementary-age students. Specifically, we are seeking individuals interested in leading small groups of elementary students on field-based studies at local natural areas, during the school year. Selected individuals will undergo orientation and training with Sierra Nevada Journeys, which will include classroom and field-based program observation. SNJ educators model several methods of instruction, providing examples of pedagogical methods reinforced by teacher professional development, so professionalism and a desire for excellence is tremendously important.

Volunteering with Sierra Nevada Journeys is an opportunity to work with an industry-recognized organization and build your skills in: research-based methods of outdoor science education, inquiry-based instruction, facilitating hands-on science experiences, and leading teams of students in collaborative problem solving.   Due to our investment in training and mentoring our volunteers, we ask that selected interns and volunteers make a commitment to SNJ of at least 2 academic semesters (for example, Fall 2015 and Spring 2016), and ideally more! A rough time commitment for each semester would be 15-30 hours per month.
