Talking Book Library Producer/Monitor and Book Reviewer

Volunteer Position Description

 

Position Overview and Impact: Operates audio recording software and monitors volunteer narrator to produce a clear, artistic, and technically sound audio book for use by blind or otherwise print-disabled library patrons statewide and nationally. [Monitor may also be asked to review the work of other teams – see position description for Audio Book Reviewer Volunteer.]

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operate recording software and equipment in cooperation with narrators as part of BTBL narration team.
  2. Work cooperatively with the narrator to determine the style and manner in which a book is to be presented, keeping in mind the audience for whom the book is intended and the nature of the material itself.
  3. Follow along in book and provide appropriate feedback to ensure that the text is intelligently and accurately presented and follows BTBL standards for narrated books.

 

Qualifications:

  • Sufficient computer literacy and knowledge of digital audio recording process or ability to learn.
  • Excellent command of American English, a broad literary background and knowledge of how to use a dictionary and other reference materials.
  • Self-disciplined, self-motivated and thorough.
  • Ability to tolerate working inside a small closed room (sound studio).

 

Training and Support Provided: Following training for HABC software, you will use recording equipment, be informed of NLS standards, and be introduced to staff and volunteers with whom you will be working, and have access to them as needed.

 

Location Commitment: All studio volunteer opportunities occur on site at BTBL Headquarters, 900 N Street in Sacramento. At this time there are no remote volunteer opportunities, though that could change in coming years.

 

Time Commitment: Minimum 2-4 hours per week/4-8 hours per month through completion of at least one Talking Book. Volunteer shifts occur during business hours, Monday through Friday 9AM to 5 PM.

 

Length of Commitment: Time will vary with the length and complexity of the book being prepared, but will usually take several months. Progress is usually made at the rate of 10-30 pages per hour.

Audio Book Reviewer Volunteer

 

Volunteer Position Description

 

Position Overview and Impact: Reviews recorded audio files in process over the course of a book’s narration, noting pronunciation, omissions, incongruities, and other technical errors. Delivers notation to original recording team for book file revision. [Reviewer may also hold the position of a Monitor– see the position description for Audio Book Monitor Volunteer.]

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Audibly review digital book file from start to finish and/or in sections, referring to print copy for guidance.
  2. Maintain error log for use by narration team.
  3. Familiarize oneself with NLS and BTBL audio production standards to ensure quality.
  4. Exercise sound judgment and tact when providing feedback for improvements to recording by narration team.

 

Qualifications:

  • Excellent command of American English, a broad literary background and knowledge of how to use a dictionary and other reference materials.
  • Self-disciplined, self-motivated and thorough.
  • Technical proficiency with computers and some knowledge of audio books and recording, or ability to learn.

 

Training and Support Provided: You will be trained to use the equipment, informed of BTBL/NLS standards, and be introduced to staff and volunteers with whom you will be working, and have access to them as needed.

Time will vary with the length and complexity of the book being prepared, but will usually take several months. Reviewer may have more than one book project going at one time.
